The All Progressives Congress (APC) has emerged victorious in the recently concluded Lagos State local government elections, sweeping all 57 chairmanship positions across the state’s 20 Local Government Areas and 37 Local Council Development Areas (LCDAs). The party also clinched 375 out of the 376 councillorship seats contested.
The only councillorship seat not won by the APC was in Yaba LCDA, where the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) secured a rare win.
Chairman of the Lagos State Independent Electoral Commission (LASIEC), Justice Bola Okikiolu-Ighile, announced the results during a post-election briefing held at the commission’s headquarters in Yaba. The briefing was attended by top security officials, including Commissioner of Police Olohundare Jimoh, DSS Deputy Director of Operations Dr. Shehu Shehu, and LASIEC commissioners.
Justice Okikiolu-Ighile described the Saturday elections as peaceful, credible, and largely devoid of disruptions. She commended Lagosians for their orderly conduct, stating, “Your engagement reinforces our shared belief in the importance of local government in service delivery and grassroots development.”
She also lauded security agencies for their professionalism, noting that no major incidents of violence, ballot snatching, or voter intimidation were recorded during the exercise.
While acknowledging minor logistical challenges such as the late arrival of personnel and materials at some polling units, she said the swift intervention of election officials and security operatives helped to minimize delays.
The collation of councillorship results was conducted at the ward level, while chairmanship results were compiled at the Local Government centres, in line with the LASIEC Law of 2008 (as amended).
Certificates of return will be issued to the newly elected officials in the coming days, according to the commission.
Justice Okikiolu-Ighile expressed gratitude to civil society groups, election observers, traditional leaders, market associations, youth and women’s organisations, and persons with disabilities for their active participation in the electoral process.
She reaffirmed LASIEC’s commitment to strengthening voter education and stakeholder engagement in future elections to combat voter apathy.
Congratulating the winners, she urged them to approach their victory as a responsibility to serve at the grassroots level.
“To the winners of this election, I congratulate you. But let me remind you that this is not just a call for celebration but a solemn call to service,” she said.
She also encouraged candidates who were unsuccessful to remain committed to democratic values and to seek redress through legal and peaceful means.
“Democracy thrives through continuous participation, dialogue, and perseverance,” she said. “We urge all political parties and candidates to embrace these ideals and channel any grievances through the appropriate legal platforms.”
