Nurain Abayomi Mumuni, a chieftain of the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC), has called on Nigerians to exercise greater caution around fuel tankers to prevent devastating accidents. His appeal follows the tragic tanker explosion at Dikko Junction along the Abuja-Kaduna Expressway in Niger State, which claimed 73 lives.
In a statement issued through his media aide, Rasheed Abubakar, Mumuni expressed his condolences to Niger State Governor Umaru Bago and the families of those who lost their lives in the incident. He emphasized the importance of public education and awareness to enhance safety and reduce risks associated with fuel tanker operations.
Mumuni warned of the dangers posed by unsafe practices near fuel tankers, including using mobile phones, which can generate static electricity that could ignite flammable substances. He urged Nigerians to report leaking or improperly parked tankers to local authorities and emphasized the need to maintain safe distances from such vehicles, especially during loading or unloading.
The APC chieftain also stressed the importance of teaching children about the hazards of fuel tankers and fostering a culture of safety through community awareness programs. He noted that addressing literacy and awareness around these issues is critical to mitigating the risks of future incidents.
“My condolences go to the executive governor of Niger State, Umaru Bago, and the victims of the fuel tanker explosion. By fostering a culture of safety and awareness, we can significantly mitigate the risks posed by fuel tanker operations in Nigeria,” Mumuni said.
The incident, which occurred on Saturday, has left many families grieving and highlights the urgent need for preventive measures. According to the Niger State Police Command, several individuals remain in critical condition following the explosion.
Mumuni concluded his remarks by calling on all Nigerians to prioritize safety and adhere to best practices to prevent future tragedies.
