Fouad Oki, a prominent chieftain of the All Progressives Congress (APC), has defended the impeachment of Lagos State House of Assembly Speaker, Mudashiru Obasa, stating that it was necessary to hold him accountable for his actions. Speaking on Channels Television’s Politics Today on Monday, Oki explained that Obasa’s impeachment, which came amid allegations of fraud, was a significant step in ensuring transparency and governance within the state’s legislative body.
Obasa, a six-term lawmaker representing Agege Constituency I, was removed from office by his colleagues in the Lagos State House of Assembly. This marks the end of his leadership, which had been under scrutiny for months due to his increasingly autocratic style. Oki criticized Obasa for treating the position as his personal empire and pointed to recent events that signaled his leadership was no longer tenable.
“This decision was not sudden; it had been on the cards for some time,” Oki remarked. “Obasa’s behavior over the last 18 months clearly indicated the need for a change. The most telling moment came during the presentation of the 2025 appropriation bill, when the leadership of the party was excluded from a key convention, signaling a clear breakdown in collaboration.”
In the wake of Obasa’s impeachment, Mojisola Meranda, the Deputy Speaker, was swiftly elected to lead the House, promising a shift in direction and renewed focus on party unity and governance. Oki’s comments suggest that this leadership transition could be the first step in restoring order and accountability in the Lagos State Assembly.
