The All Progressives Congress (APC) in Osun State has called on the Federal Government to declare a state of emergency in the state, following a surge in political violence that resulted in fatalities. The call comes after reports of clashes on Monday, where at least two people were killed amid rising tensions over the reinstatement of local government officials.
Senator Ajibola Basiru, APC’s National Secretary, suggested that the Federal Government intervene, citing attacks on farmers by suspected PDP thugs. He emphasized the growing instability in the region, urging for drastic action.
However, the Osun State government rejected the call, accusing the APC of inciting violence. Kolapo Alimi, the state Commissioner for Information, responded strongly on Channels Television’s Politics Today, asserting that the APC’s actions were aimed at creating chaos. He urged President Bola Tinubu to ignore the APC’s plea and allow peace to prevail.
The crisis escalated as reinstated local government chairmen and councillors attempted to take office, citing a court ruling. Their efforts were met with resistance in Oshogbo, Ikire, and Irewole, culminating in the death of one of the reinstated chairmen, Remi Abbas.
In response, the Inspector-General of Police, IGP Kayode Adeolu Egbetokun, deployed additional tactical units to Osun to restore order. The police have condemned the violence and vowed to bring those responsible to justice.
