The All Progressives Congress (APC) has endorsed President Bola Tinubu’s declaration of a state of emergency in Rivers State, asserting that suspended Governor Siminalayi Fubara’s actions warranted the drastic measure.
In a statement, APC spokesperson Felix Morka outlined what he described as Fubara’s impeachable offenses, arguing that the suspended governor’s decisions directly led to the emergency rule.
Morka accused Fubara of dismantling the democratic structure in Rivers State, particularly by allegedly demolishing the state House of Assembly and governing without a functional legislature. He claimed that by spending state funds without proper legislative approval, Fubara invalidated his constitutional authority as governor.
“There cannot be a governor without a legislature and a judiciary,” Morka stated. “All three arms of government must co-exist for a legitimate government to function under the Nigerian Constitution.”
Citing a Supreme Court ruling, Morka insisted that Rivers State had effectively lacked a functioning government since Fubara’s alleged actions against the legislature. He defended President Tinubu’s intervention as a necessary step to restore order and governance in the state.
“The declaration of a state of emergency is a constitutional measure aimed at safeguarding lives, property, and governance in Rivers State,” Morka added. “President Tinubu has once again demonstrated courage and leadership in preventing a total breakdown of law and order.”
