The All Progressives Congress (APC) has accused former Kaduna State Governor, Mallam Nasir El-Rufai, of plotting to impose former Vice President Atiku Abubakar as the 2027 presidential candidate of the African Democratic Congress (ADC), in a move the party says threatens Nigeria’s unity and power rotation agreement.
In a statement released on Monday and signed by its National Publicity Secretary, Felix Morka, the APC alleged that El-Rufai and his allies in the ADC are attempting to derail the North-South rotational presidency arrangement by pushing for another Northern candidate despite the current administration being led by a Southerner, President Bola Ahmed Tinubu.
This comes on the heels of El-Rufai’s recent criticism of the Tinubu-led administration. During a political gathering in Sokoto on Saturday, the former governor reportedly described the government as “incompetent and clannish.”
The APC fired back, dismissing his remarks as baseless and accusing him of political sabotage. “El-Rufai and Atiku want to do to Nigeria what Atiku did to the PDP. The El-Rufai and Atiku hijacked ADC constitute a clear and present threat to the unity, peace, and progress of Nigeria,” the statement read.
Morka further claimed that the opposition figures have no credible policy alternatives and are resorting to “headline attacks” in a desperate bid to discredit the current administration.
The APC’s accusations mark a deepening rift within Nigeria’s political landscape as the countdown to the 2027 general elections begins.
