ABUJA — Human rights lawyer and activist, Dr. Maxwell Opara, has declared that President Bola Tinubu’s administration is so unpopular that “any serious politician” could defeat him in the 2027 presidential election.
Speaking during an interview on Arise Television’s News Day, Opara dismissed recent remarks by former Minister of Transportation, Chibuike Amaechi, who claimed he could easily beat Tinubu at the polls.
“It’s not about Amaechi,” Opara said. “Anybody who is serious in 2027 will defeat President Tinubu — be it Nasir El-Rufai, Atiku Abubakar, or Peter Obi. Nigerians are frustrated and want change. The only thing they don’t want to see is President Tinubu and the APC.”
Opara attributed the president’s dwindling popularity to what he described as “unpopular policies, unnecessary spending, wastage, and poor handling of critical national issues,” including the continued detention of IPOB leader, Nnamdi Kanu.
According to him, Nigerians are angry over the state of the economy and the government’s perceived insensitivity, making Tinubu vulnerable in a free and fair contest.
On Amaechi’s reported interest in the African Democratic Congress (ADC) ticket, Opara was blunt: “Before you go to heaven, you must first die. Before Amaechi can think of defeating Tinubu, he must first get the ADC ticket — and he cannot. That ticket belongs to Atiku Abubakar. They won’t even give it to Peter Obi.”
He advised the former Rivers governor to “wake up from sleep” if he believes he can clinch the party’s presidential ticket.
