Another SAN Sues Dele Farotimi for N500M Over Alleged Defamation

0

A Senior Advocate of Nigeria (SAN), Olu Daramola, has filed a defamation lawsuit against Tomilola Titus Farotimi, also known as Dele Farotimi, seeking N500 million in damages. The lawsuit, filed on December 13, 2024, at the Ojodu Abiodun Division of Ogun State High Court, stems from allegations of defamatory content in Farotimi’s recently published book, Nigeria and Its Criminal Justice System.

This legal action follows a similar suit filed by Chief Afe Babalola (SAN) in November, accusing Farotimi of defamation in the same book. Daramola, who is a partner at Afe Babalola Law Chambers, claims that the book contains derogatory and offensive statements on page 64, which he argues have caused significant harm to his reputation, prestige, and professional standing.

The claimant is seeking a court order to:

Award N500 million in exemplary and general damages.
Force Farotimi to issue an apology in two prominent national newspapers.
Recover and destroy all copies of the book still in circulation, both in physical and digital formats.
Enforce a perpetual injunction against Farotimi to prevent further publication or distribution of the book.
The legal proceedings come at a time when Farotimi is in custody of the Nigeria Correctional Service (NCoS) and has yet to respond to the lawsuit. A hearing date has not yet been scheduled.

Daramola’s suit underscores the gravity of the alleged defamation, highlighting the damage caused to his reputation as a distinguished legal practitioner.
