In a major political shift within the Federal Capital Territory, the Chairman of Abuja Municipal Area Council (AMAC), Mr. Christopher Maikalangu, has officially defected from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) to the All Progressives Congress (APC).
Maikalangu announced his defection on Monday through a statement released by his Senior Special Assistant on Media and Public Affairs, Mr. Kingsley Madaki.
The AMAC Chairman cited political misalignment between the local council and the federal government as a key factor in his decision, noting that the disconnect has limited access to federal appointments and employment opportunities for residents of the council.
“The position we took is for the good of democracy and to ensure that the good people of AMAC move forward,” Maikalangu stated. “The decision is rooted in the collective interest of the constituents. I was not elected to lead the entire Nigerians, but the AMAC residents.”
He emphasized that his move to the ruling party is a strategic step to promote inclusive governance and sustainable development for his people.
“I looked at the interests of my people and I have seen that these interests cannot be protected in any other platform,” he added, expressing confidence that the APC offers a stronger foundation for advancing the welfare of AMAC residents.
Maikalangu was elected under the PDP banner in the 2022 AMAC council election, defeating his closest rival, Murtala Karshi of the APC, with a total of 19,302 votes.
His defection is expected to reshape the political dynamics in the FCT, especially as preparations for future elections gather momentum.
