Akume Urges Northern Politicians to Wait Until 2031, Defends Tinubu’s Leadership and Economic Reforms

The Secretary to the Government of the Federation (SGF), Senator George Akume, has urged northern politicians, including former Vice President Atiku Abubakar, to hold off their presidential ambitions until 2031. He stressed the importance of giving President Bola Ahmed Tinubu the opportunity to complete his current term and potentially a second term if re-elected in 2027.

Speaking on TVC’s Politics on Sunday, hosted by Femi Akande, Akume highlighted that patience is crucial for political stability. “If it is God’s will for Alhaji Atiku Abubakar to become President, even at the age of 90, it will happen. But for now, they should let President Tinubu continue his work of repositioning the nation,” he stated.

Akume also defended the administration’s economic strategies, describing the Tax Reform Bills as critical legislation designed to rescue the nation’s economy. He urged Nigerians to support their passage through the National Assembly, emphasizing that the reforms, including the removal of fuel subsidies and the harmonization of foreign exchange windows, are vital steps toward economic stabilization.

“It is easy to destroy but difficult to build. These reforms aim to rebuild the Nigeria that was destroyed by previous administrations. Very soon, Nigerians will begin to see the positive outcomes of these reforms,” Akume remarked, expressing optimism about the nation’s economic trajectory.
