Akume Urges Northern Politicians to Back Tinubu, Wait Until 2031 for Presidency Bid

— Commends Tinubu’s Achievements, Says 2027 Is Not Up for Contest

KADUNA — Secretary to the Government of the Federation (SGF), Senator George Akume, has called on political actors from Northern Nigeria to shelve their presidential ambitions until 2031, urging them to support President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s administration for continuity and national development.

Akume made the appeal on Tuesday during a two-day interactive session on government-citizen engagement held in Kaduna. The event, themed “Assessing Electoral Promises: Fostering Government-Citizens’ Engagement for National Unity,” was organized by the Sir Ahmadu Bello Memorial Foundation.

Speaking at the forum, the SGF praised the foundation for creating a platform that fosters dialogue between citizens and government, aimed at enhancing governance, democracy, and development.

“President Tinubu has spent just over two years in office, and his achievements within this period have been both fundamental and remarkable,” Akume said. “He has kept his promise of impartial governance and made significant strides in national security, agriculture, infrastructure, and economic reforms.”

Highlighting the impact of the administration’s policies, Akume said the removal of fuel subsidies has freed up resources for development projects at the sub-national level. He cited interventions that have improved food security, reduced prices of agricultural produce, and revitalised critical infrastructure nationwide.

He stressed that Tinubu’s Renewed Hope Agenda is not a mere slogan but a clear roadmap aimed at restoring confidence and opportunities across all regions of the country.

“President Tinubu has touched every region positively. The North is not left behind. In fact, numerous appointments have been made from the region, and several landmark projects, such as the Sokoto–Bagary Super Highway and an upcoming Akwanga–Gombe corridor, attest to the administration’s commitment to balanced development,” he said.

Akume warned northern politicians against aligning with groups that could derail the progress recorded so far, urging them to focus on national unity and continuity of development rather than eyeing the 2027 general elections.

“I want to encourage our northern politicians to be patient until 2031. Supporting a leader who is already delivering results is the patriotic thing to do,” he added.

He also lauded the administration’s efforts in diplomacy, education, job creation, tax reform, local government autonomy, and the fight against corruption, describing Tinubu as a visionary leader laying the foundation for a new Nigeria.

The SGF concluded by reaffirming the federal government’s resolve to ensure inclusive growth and equity in project distribution, urging all citizens to reject misinformation and continue supporting the current administration’s development drive.
