Senate President Godswill Akpabio has dismissed any possibility of President Bola Tinubu facing impeachment, affirming that the current National Assembly remains firmly behind the president with two years left in his first term.
Speaking on Thursday at the All Progressives Congress (APC) National Summit in Abuja, Akpabio emphasized the legislature’s commitment to constructive governance and oversight, noting that while the National Assembly has the courage to hold the president accountable, impeachment is not on the table.
“If this president has done well, is it not us (the National Assembly) that will say so? If he has not done well, is it not us that will give him notice of impeachment?” Akpabio asked. “We are not giving him notice of impeachment; we are giving him notice that it was difficult for you in 2023, but in 2027 I see everything turning around—the number of states that are coming to join you.”
The statement came as the APC Governors’ Forum formally endorsed President Tinubu for a second term. Chairman of the Forum and Governor of Imo State, Hope Uzodimma, announced that APC governors are committed to supporting Tinubu’s re-election campaign.
“That the governors produced by the APC are hereby charged to take responsibility to market all federal government policies and occupy all the political space in their domains, win all elections in their states come 2027,” Uzodimma declared.
He further moved for the official adoption of President Tinubu as the party’s candidate for 2027, stating: “It is therefore my humble pleasure, with total humility to the Almighty God, to move that this august assembly adopt and concur with the position of the Progressive Governors that Mr. President carries our flag in 2027, and the governors take the responsibility for delivering this mandate.”
The summit marks a strong show of unity within the ruling party, as both the legislature and governors rally behind Tinubu ahead of the next election cycle.
