The Pan-Yoruba socio-cultural group, Afenifere, has expressed shock over the passing of renowned Ijaw leader, Chief Edwin Clark, describing him as a fearless patriot and a voice of justice for Nigeria.

Clark, who died on Monday in Abuja at the age of 97, was the leader of the Pan Niger Delta Forum (PANDEF) and a prominent advocate for equity and national unity.

Reacting to the news, Afenifere’s National Publicity Secretary, Mr. Jare Ajayi, said Clark’s death was reminiscent of the loss of their late chieftain, Chief Ayo Adebanjo.

“We received the news of Pa Edwin Clark’s demise with great shock, just like when we lost our leader, Pa Ayo Adebanjo,” Ajayi said. “Clark was very deep and, of course, very fearless. He was a patriot par excellence, and Nigeria meant so much to him.”

Ajayi conveyed condolences on behalf of Afenifere’s leader, Pa Reuben Fasoranti, noting that Clark’s unwavering stance on national issues earned him respect across the country.

“Even in his old age, Clark remained active and never hesitated to express his views on matters of national importance. He will be deeply missed,” Ajayi added.

Chief Edwin Clark, a former Federal Commissioner for Information, was a distinguished lawyer, activist, and politician. As the founder of PANDEF and co-leader of the South and Middle Belt Leaders Forum (SMBLF), he dedicated his life to advocating justice, equality, and human rights for all Nigerians.
