The pan-Yoruba socio-political organization, Afenifere, has reiterated that restructuring remains the most effective solution to Nigeria’s long-standing socio-political and economic challenges. The group also expressed deep concern over the resurgence of kidnapping and banditry, particularly in Yorubaland, and called for urgent action, with a focus on the establishment of state police.
This declaration was made at the conclusion of Afenifere’s caucus meeting, held at the residence of its national leader, Pa Reuben Fasoranti, in Akure, Ondo State. The meeting addressed critical issues affecting the region and the nation as a whole.
In a communiqué signed by the National Publicity Secretary, Jare Ajayi, Afenifere urged state governors to collaborate with the federal government to ensure the timely allocation and implementation of local government funds.
“Afenifere again calls on the Federal Government and security agencies to overhaul the security architecture, ensuring that those tasked with security responsibilities are able to investigate the root causes and address them effectively,” the communiqué stated.
The group also called on the National Security Adviser, Mallam Nuhu Ribadu, to work closely with state governors to develop strategies to combat the growing security threats, including terrorism, in the country.
Afenifere emphasized the need for state governors in Yorubaland to strengthen regional security networks. Specifically, they advocated for an expansion of the Amotekun security force, ensuring personnel are adequately trained, equipped, and motivated. The group also recommended the integration of modern technologies, such as drones, to enhance security efforts in the region.
