Adeleke Threatens to Sack Monarchs Over Osun Violence

0

Osun State Governor, Ademola Adeleke, has issued a stern warning to traditional rulers in Ifon, Erin-Osun, and Ilobu communities, vowing to depose any monarch whose domain experiences renewed violence.

The governor’s warning came in response to intelligence reports suggesting that some faceless groups in the conflict-prone areas were planning fresh attacks. His statement, delivered through his spokesperson, Olawale Rasheed, on Monday in Osogbo, emphasized the government’s commitment to maintaining peace and order.

Governor Adeleke expressed concern over the reports of potential violence during the Sallah celebrations, noting that security agencies have intensified surveillance to prevent any further disturbances. He also disclosed that ongoing investigations are focusing on key figures linked to the previous clashes.

“I will remind the leaders of these towns that the peace agreements they signed are not mere formalities. They will be held accountable before the law. We relaxed the 24-hour curfew on humanitarian grounds, understanding the suffering of innocent residents due to the actions of a few troublemakers. However, any attempt to exploit the curfew adjustment for renewed violence will result in its full reinstatement,” the governor warned.

Governor Adeleke further stressed that traditional rulers would not be spared if violence reoccurs in their respective communities. “Any traditional ruler whose domain witnesses violence again will be removed from office. This is non-negotiable. Royal fathers must take charge and ensure peace among their subjects. Enough is enough,” he stated.

The state government had earlier relaxed the indefinite 24-hour curfew imposed on the three warring communities to allow for Eid-el-Fitr celebrations. The curfew was initially enforced following communal clashes in mid-March that led to loss of lives and destruction of properties worth millions of naira.

Governor Adeleke reaffirmed his administration’s commitment to peace and warned that any breach would be met with decisive action.
