ABUJA — The African Democratic Congress (ADC) has raised alarm over worsening insecurity in northern Nigeria, revealing that more than 140 people have been killed in Katsina and Zamfara states within the last two months.
The party, through its interim spokesman, Bolaji Abdullahi, issued a statement on Sunday urging President Bola Ahmed Tinubu to immediately declare a state of emergency in both states, similar to the drastic action earlier taken in Rivers State.
“Urgently declare a state of emergency in the affected states. Taken together, over 140 Nigerians have been murdered in just two months in Katsina and Zamfara alone,” Abdullahi stated.
The ADC described the killings as evidence of a total collapse of Nigeria’s security architecture, warning that continued government inaction would only embolden criminal gangs terrorizing citizens.
Recent attacks underscore the scale of the crisis: barely four days ago, 50 worshippers were massacred in Katsina, while in Zamfara, bandits ambushed police officers, killing two.
In March 2025, President Tinubu had declared a state of emergency in Rivers State, suspending Governor Simi Fubara, his deputy, and other elected officials for six months — a move the ADC now insists must be replicated in Katsina and Zamfara to save lives.
