ADC Alleges Plot by FG to Cripple Opposition Coalition Ahead of 2027 Elections

The African Democratic Congress (ADC) has raised alarm over what it describes as a coordinated attempt by the Federal Government to undermine the rising momentum of the opposition coalition ahead of the 2027 general elections.

In a strongly worded statement released on Monday, the party accused the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) of deploying intimidation and coercion tactics to destabilise the ADC and its coalition allies. The statement, signed by Mallam Bolaji Abdullahi, the ADC’s Interim National Publicity Secretary and National Coalition Spokesperson, claimed that former state chairmen and members of the party’s executive committees in the North-East and North-West were recently summoned to a secret meeting with top federal officials.

“We have credible intelligence that the aim of this meeting is not for national security or peacebuilding. It is to intimidate, coerce, and if possible, co-opt these individuals into a fabricated scheme against the opposition coalition. This is not politics. This is sabotage,” Abdullahi said.

According to the ADC, the alleged plot is a reaction to its recent political activities—most notably, the July 1 Coalition Declaration and the July 2 unveiling of the ADC as the coalition’s political platform—which it said have unsettled the APC and the Tinubu-led administration.

“The Tinubu administration, having lost the trust of the Nigerian people, is clearly threatened by a united and credible opposition. Rather than make amends, it has reverted to its old tactics of destabilising opposition parties,” the party stated.

The ADC described the reported developments as a dangerous assault on Nigeria’s multiparty democracy, warning that such actions could lead the country towards a one-party state.

Citing the tolerance demonstrated by former President Goodluck Jonathan, which allowed the APC to flourish and win the 2015 election, the ADC called on President Bola Ahmed Tinubu to rein in his appointees and prove his commitment to democratic values.

“The President needs to remind his men that if the Jonathan administration had been this intolerant, the APC would never have risen to power, and he would not be President today,” the statement noted.

Reaffirming its commitment to democratic principles, the ADC declared the coalition movement as a people-driven force aimed at restoring justice, transparency, and vision in governance.

“This movement is bigger than any individual or political party. It belongs to every Nigerian who is tired of hardship, manipulation, and misrule. We will resist any attempt to turn Nigeria into a one-party dictatorship, using every democratic means available,” the party declared.

The ADC urged Nigerians to remain vigilant and resist any effort to erode the nation’s democratic foundations, insisting that it stands as a movement of hope, justice, and responsible leadership.

These allegations emerge as political temperatures continue to rise, with the ADC asserting its role as a formidable force in shaping the opposition landscape ahead of the 2027 polls.
