A Federal High Court in Abuja has granted bail to social media activist Olamide Thomas, who was arrested and detained for allegedly threatening the life of President Bola Tinubu’s son, Seyi Tinubu. She had been in detention for 25 days.
Thomas was arrested in Lagos on December 13, 2024, and faces a three-count charge brought by the Inspector-General of Police, Kayode Egbetokun. The charges arose from a video she reportedly recorded on her Facebook page on October 20, in which she allegedly wished harm upon Seyi Tinubu, as well as the children of the police IG and spokesperson of the Nigeria Police Force, Muyiwa Adejobi.
The video was reportedly made after Thomas claimed she was brutalized by police officers during the #EndSARS memorial procession at the Lekki tollgate in Lagos. Following her arrest, she was transferred to the National Cyber-Crime Centre in Abuja and subsequently arraigned in court on December 20, where she pleaded not guilty to the charges.
The court granted her bail with conditions, including a ₦10 million bond and a surety who must meet specific requirements, such as residing within the court’s jurisdiction and providing a three-year tax clearance certificate. Both the defendant and her surety are also required to deposit recent passport photographs with the court.
The court found no evidence suggesting that Thomas posed a flight risk or would interfere with witnesses, stating that the charges against her were bailable. The case has been adjourned to February 18, 2025, for trial.
