Prominent activist lawyer, Dele Farotimi, has finally reunited with his family in Lagos after spending 20 days in prison. Farotimi, known for his controversial book Nigeria and its Criminal Justice System, had been remanded following allegations made against respected legal luminary Afe Babalola within the publication.

Farotimi’s release comes days after an Ekiti State Magistrate Court granted him bail, which he met on Tuesday, December 19, 2024.

Dr. Tanko Yunusa, National Coordinator of the Obidient Movement, expressed joy over Farotimi’s return in a statement, applauding the resilience of those who advocated for his release.

“Today, we rejoice as our brother, Dele Farotimi, has finally reunited with his family in Lagos after meeting the bail conditions that kept him away from his loved ones. His return home is a testament to the unyielding spirit of truth and resilience that defines our movement,” the statement read.

Yunusa also extended gratitude to Farotimi’s legal team, supporters, and advocates, emphasizing their unwavering commitment to justice. He acknowledged the efforts of Mr. Peter Obi, the leader of the Obidient Movement, whose support played a critical role in securing Farotimi’s release.

“Mr. Peter Obi’s commitment to justice and the rule of law continues to inspire the Obidient Movement and our vision for a new Nigeria. Together, we will ensure no voice is silenced,” Yunusa stated.

Farotimi’s arrest and subsequent incarceration had sparked widespread reactions, highlighting systemic challenges within Nigeria’s judicial system. His return marks a significant moment for activists and supporters advocating for justice and the protection of free speech in Nigeria.
