The Abia State House of Assembly has passed a resolution directing its Committee on Works to collaborate with the State’s Ministry of Works to undertake palliative measures on the collapsed Mbato Ofeme Bridge in Umuahia North Local Government Area.

The collapse of the bridge has severed the affected community from other parts of the state, prompting urgent calls for intervention. Speaker of the House, Rt. Hon. Emmanuel Emeruwa, who announced the resolution, reaffirmed the State Government’s commitment to providing essential infrastructure across all regions, including rural communities.

The resolution was passed following a Matter of Urgent Public Importance presented by Hon. Anderson Akaliro, the representative for Umuahia North constituency. Akaliro highlighted the severe hardship faced by his constituents due to the bridge’s collapse and stressed the need for immediate repairs before the onset of the rainy season, which could further exacerbate the situation.

In a related development, the House also passed a resolution urging the State Government to support local government authorities and strengthen the Abia State Road Funds Administration Board and the Abia State Rural Access Road Agency to enhance rural road rehabilitation efforts across the state.

This resolution was prompted by another Matter of Urgent Public Importance brought forward by Hon. Chijioke Uruakpa, the representative for Ugwunagbo constituency. Uruakpa emphasized the dire condition of rural roads in Wards 4, 6, and 7 of Ugwunagbo constituency, stressing the need for immediate repairs to improve accessibility and ease the suffering of residents.

The Assembly’s resolutions reflect a broader commitment to addressing infrastructure challenges and improving road networks in Abia State, particularly in rural areas.
