The Abia State Government has officially lifted the ban on the operations of the National Union of Road Transport Workers (NURTW), signaling a new chapter for transport management in the state.
Commissioner for Transport, Chimezie Isaac Ukaegbu, made the announcement on Tuesday after a strategic meeting with NURTW representatives from both the state and national levels. He said the decision reflects the government’s commitment to fairness, dialogue, and the creation of a more efficient and orderly transport system.
“The government of Dr. Alex Otti remains focused on building a safe, convenient, and structured transportation environment in Abia,” Ukaegbu stated.
The lifting of the ban was warmly received by the NURTW leadership. The union’s National President, Musiliu Akinsanya (popularly known as MC Oluomo), expressed gratitude to the Abia State Government. Speaking through his representative, Deputy National Chairman Aliyu Isaa Ore, Akinsanya pledged that the union would operate in full alignment with the state’s transport policies and reform agenda.
Also addressing attendees, the newly elected Abia State NURTW Chairman, Chukwuma Azode, promised to lead the union responsibly and in line with the government’s vision.
“We are committed to putting an end to the lawlessness of the past. This new leadership is a fresh opportunity to contribute positively to the development of Abia’s transport sector,” Azode said.
The move marks a renewed partnership between the state and transport stakeholders as efforts intensify to improve mobility and public service delivery across Abia.
