The Abia State Government, through its Ministry of Budget and Planning, has officially commenced the registration of all citizens and residents in the state, aimed at issuing the Abia State Social Identification Number (ABSSIN).
Announcing the initiative on Monday, the Commissioner for Budget and Planning, Kingsley Anosike, described ABSSIN as a unique identity system designed to provide every Abia resident with a verifiable identity.
According to Anosike, the registration is a crucial step towards creating a comprehensive database to enhance socio-economic planning and improve access to essential services. “This initiative will link residents to vital services and benefits, including social welfare programmes, healthcare services, student scholarships, and other intervention opportunities,” he explained.
To ensure wide coverage, trained enumerators will visit homes, offices, markets, motor parks, schools, churches, and communities to register residents and issue their unique ABSSIN numbers.
Anosike emphasized that the registration process is entirely free and open to everyone, from newborns to the elderly. He also urged residents to report any cases of extortion, noting that registration can alternatively be completed online via Abiapay.com.
