Tajudeen Abbas, Speaker of the House of Representatives, has urged the National Association of Resident Doctors (NARD) to reconsider their strike decision. On Monday, July 24, 2023, Abbas made this appeal during a meeting between House leadership and NARD in Abuja. The strike had been declared by the union.
“I would urge you to suspend the impending strike while we intervene, and I would appreciate your understanding that a new administration has just taken over,” he said.
Abbas suggested that NARD consider the fact that a new administration was still settling in and that Ministers had yet to take office. He noted that NARD’s decision to meet with the House demonstrated their faith in the House’s ability to intervene and resolve the outstanding concerns.
He said, “This is most reassuring because the 9th Assembly had previously intervened in this matter. We hope to even go beyond the steps and actions taken by the previous House to ensure that we find a lasting resolution to the ever-lingering crisis.
“We are not unmindful of the many sacrifices Resident Doctors have continued to make in the health sector despite the many challenges you face and the poor conditions within which you work.
”While many of your colleagues have left the shores of our country in pursuit of better working conditions, you have chosen to remain behind in service to the fatherland. We appreciate that and we do not take it for granted.”
