Former Minister of Information and Culture, Lai Mohammed, has expressed deep sorrow over the death of former President Muhammadu Buhari, describing the loss as a personal tragedy that goes beyond politics.
Buhari reportedly passed away on Sunday in London, United Kingdom, where he was receiving treatment for an undisclosed illness. A delegation led by Vice President Kashim Shettima has reportedly been dispatched to the UK to facilitate the return of the former President’s remains.
In a heartfelt statement personally signed and released to the press, Lai Mohammed reflected on his close relationship with the late president, whom he described as a mentor, pillar of support, and father figure.
“The death of President Buhari is a deeply personal loss for me. I have lost not just a leader and a boss but a mentor, pillar of support, and father figure,” the former minister wrote.
He praised Buhari’s character, calling him “a rare patriot, a man of unwavering faith and integrity, an incorruptible leader, a humble statesman, and the very epitome of honesty.”
Beyond his well-documented leadership style, Lai Mohammed highlighted Buhari’s compassion and humanity. “President Buhari was a true humanist, a man who constantly prioritized empathy, compassion, and the well-being of others in all his actions,” he said.
He also recalled the former president’s constant concern for his welfare during his tenure as the government’s spokesperson. “On one occasion, he publicly remarked, ‘I pity Lai Mohammed,’ a testament to his awareness of the pressures I faced.”
Mohammed spoke of the unwavering support he received from Buhari, even after their time in office. He shared fond memories of personal visits, including a recent one during the last Ramadan in Kaduna, which turned out to be their final meeting.
“When I heard of the illness that took him to London, I continued to check on his condition through his aides while praying fervently for his recovery,” he added.
“It was truly a privilege for me to have known and worked with him,” Lai Mohammed concluded, offering prayers for Buhari’s soul and comfort for his family and the nation.
The late Muhammadu Buhari served as Nigeria’s president from 2015 to 2023. His death marks the end of an era for many in the country’s political landscape.
