Police Await Official Briefing as Manhunt Begins

The Osun State Police Command has disclosed that it has not received any official communication from the Nigerian Correctional Service (NCoS) regarding the escape of seven inmates from the Medium Security Custodial Centre in Ilesa.

Police spokesperson, DSP Abiodun Ojelabi, told the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) that while the command is aware of the incident through intelligence reports, it has yet to be formally briefed by prison authorities.

“We also heard about the escape, but there is no official report made to the police by the NCoS,” Ojelabi said. “Our intel revealed that the escape did occur, but the cause remains unclear as our men have visited the facility.”

He stressed that the police remain committed to their duty of safeguarding lives and property, assuring that any escapee found would be apprehended.

The Nigerian Correctional Service has since confirmed the escape, attributing it to a structural breach caused by heavy rainfall in the early hours of Tuesday. The downpour, which began around 2:00 a.m., reportedly damaged the perimeter fence, providing an opportunity for the inmates to flee.

In a statement signed by the Deputy Controller of Corrections and Public Relations Officer, Umar Abubakar, the Controller-General of Corrections, Sylvester Ndidi Nwakuche, ordered an immediate investigation into the incident and assured the public that efforts were ongoing to recapture the escapees.

“The Service is working closely with sister security agencies and community leaders to return the escapees to custody,” the statement read. “We also solicit public support in providing any useful information that could aid their recapture.”

A manhunt has since been launched to track down the fugitives.
