Renowned Nigerian Statesman and Cardiologist, Professor Jibril Aminu, Dies at 85

Abuja, Nigeria – Former Nigerian senator, diplomat, and eminent cardiologist, Professor Jibril Aminu, has passed away at the age of 85. He died on Wednesday in Abuja after a prolonged illness.

Professor Aminu was widely respected for his distinguished service to Nigeria, both in the medical field and in public office. He served as Nigeria’s Ambassador to the United States from 1999 to 2003, where he played a key role in strengthening Nigeria–U.S. relations during the early years of the Fourth Republic.

Following his diplomatic service, he was elected to the Senate, representing Adamawa Central Senatorial District from 2003 to 2011. His tenure in the National Assembly was marked by contributions to health, education, and foreign policy reforms.

Born in 1939, Professor Aminu earned his first medical degree from the University of Ibadan in 1965 and went on to obtain a PhD in Medicine from the Royal Post-Graduate Medical School, London, in 1972. He gained international recognition as a leading cardiologist and was instrumental in advancing medical education and research in Nigeria.

Professor Aminu is survived by two wives and nine children, leaving behind a legacy of excellence, dedication, and national service. Tributes have begun pouring in from across the country, honoring his lifelong commitment to the nation’s development.

Funeral arrangements are expected to be announced by the family in the coming days.
