35 Months Without Pay: Angry Pensioners Storm Streets Over Unpaid Arrears

Abuja — Scores of retirees under the umbrella of the Nigerian Union of Pensioners (NUP) on Monday staged a protest, demanding the immediate payment of their long-overdue entitlements.

The pensioners — drawn from agencies including the Nigerian Telecommunications Limited (NITEL), Federal Radio Corporation of Nigeria (FRCN), and Nigerian Railway Corporation (NRC) — said they are owed as much as 35 months in pension arrears, in addition to the non-payment of the N35,000 palliative promised by the Federal Government.

Carrying placards and chanting solidarity songs, the visibly frustrated retirees lamented the severe hardship the delays have brought upon them and their families.

“We have given our productive years to this country, yet we are left to suffer in old age,” one of the protesters said. “We demand a clear and specific date from the Federal Government for the payment of our entitlements.”

The aggrieved pensioners urged authorities to take swift action, warning that their patience has run out after years of unfulfilled promises.
