2027: Hamza Al-Mustapha Declares Ambition To Run For President

Retired Major Hamza Al-Mustapha has officially declared his intention to run for president in Nigeria’s 2027 general elections, affirming that this time, his ambition is not a test but a serious pursuit.

Al-Mustapha, who served as Chief Security Officer to the late Head of State, General Sani Abacha, made the announcement during an interview with BBC Hausa. He emphasized his commitment to seeing Nigeria transition into a more transparent and secure democracy, noting that election integrity and national security will be at the forefront of his campaign.

“God willing, I only tested it before, but this time I’m serious about running,” he said.

The former military officer expressed concerns over the credibility of Nigeria’s electoral process, alleging that past election outcomes were manipulated rather than accurately counted. He revealed that discussions have already begun with international observers to ensure rigorous monitoring of the 2027 polls.

“That is why we have discussed with foreign countries, asking them to closely monitor Nigeria, especially regarding the elections, because election results are usually written,” Al-Mustapha stated.

Addressing the idea of joining political alliances, Al-Mustapha dismissed the possibility, asserting that he would not compromise his values by aligning with groups whose ideologies clash with his.

“If their ideology is different from ours, then I don’t want to be part of something shameful that would bring dishonor to the country with my involvement,” he said.

When asked about supporting other prominent figures such as former Vice President Atiku Abubakar, Al-Mustapha ruled out any political collaboration. “There is no possibility of our paths crossing politically, so there’s no need for that question,” he replied.

This will not be Al-Mustapha’s first attempt at the presidency. He previously contested in the 2019 and 2023 elections but failed to secure significant support. However, he insists that his 2027 bid marks a new chapter of determination and seriousness.

With his military background and focus on national security, Al-Mustapha is positioning himself as a unique voice in the growing field of presidential hopefuls, promising a campaign anchored on integrity, accountability, and a firm rejection of electoral malpractice.
