2027: Peter Obi Free to Contest Labour Party Ticket With or Without Me — Datti Baba-Ahmed

Former Labour Party vice-presidential candidate, Dr. Yusuf Datti Baba-Ahmed, has affirmed that Peter Obi is free to pursue the party’s presidential ticket for the 2027 general election, regardless of whether they run together again.

Speaking on The Morning Brief, a Channels Television programme aired on Wednesday, Baba-Ahmed expressed unwavering respect for Obi and reiterated his full support for Obi’s continued political ambition within the Labour Party.

“I welcome him openly. The Labour Party welcomes him to still come and retain the Labour Party ticket and contest in 2027 — with or without me,” he said.

Baba-Ahmed also addressed recent coalition meetings spearheaded by the African Democratic Congress (ADC), dismissing claims that Obi’s participation in such talks amounts to anti-party activity.

“This is not anti-party activity. It is an unfolding situation,” he stated. “The meaning of a coalition is that political parties, interest groups, and individuals are coming together.”

He further revealed that Peter Obi was fully aware of his attendance at the National Executive Council (NEC) meeting organized by the Abure-led faction of the Labour Party, which he said was focused on reconciliation and party unity.

“The Labour Party is not a party to walk away from, not a party to be abandoned or to be ignored,” Baba-Ahmed asserted.

Emphasizing the importance of political dialogue and collaboration, he added: “I call for parties to get together and talk — that’s the way forward. I’m a positive catalyst in this case. I’m bringing people together to unite, understand themselves, and make good efforts again to rescue Nigeria.”

His remarks come amid ongoing internal tensions within the Labour Party and growing momentum around broader opposition coalitions ahead of the 2027 elections.
