2027: PDP in Talks to Woo Peter Obi, Ex-President Jonathan Back — Abba Moro

ABUJA — Senate Minority Leader and Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) chieftain, Abba Moro, has revealed that discussions are underway to bring Labour Party’s 2023 presidential candidate, Peter Obi, and former President Goodluck Jonathan back into the PDP ahead of the 2027 elections.

Speaking on Politics Today, a Channels Television programme on Tuesday, the Benue South Senator disclosed that key stakeholders within the party have been reaching out to Obi, assuring him of strong prospects should he return.

“In the run-up to 2027, I am aware certain individuals have been talking to Peter Obi, saying, ‘Hey, come back home, this is what we are likely to do, and if you come, you stand a chance of being the candidate,’” Moro said.

When asked about the possibility of Jonathan rejoining the PDP and contesting again, Moro confirmed that overtures had also been made to the former president.

“Well, some persons are talking to the former president, to come and run, and it’s a possibility,” he stated.

Moro, however, acknowledged concerns over the constitutional implications of Jonathan running again, given the number of times he has been sworn in as president. He dismissed the fears, recalling that in 2015, the courts had already affirmed Jonathan’s eligibility to contest.

“You recall that in 2015, when former President Jonathan wanted to run, there were cries everywhere about the constitutionality of his candidature, but eventually it was settled by the court that he was qualified — and that is why he ran,” Moro explained.

The fresh moves signal intense political maneuvering within the PDP as it works to rebuild its ranks and mount a strong challenge against the ruling APC ahead of the 2027 general elections.
