ABUJA — The Arewa Consultative Forum (ACF) has said former President Goodluck Jonathan presents a more appealing option for Nigeria’s presidency in 2027, while dismissing Peter Obi’s one-term pledge as a sign of desperation.
Speaking during an interview on Arise TV on Thursday, ACF’s National Publicity Secretary, Professor Tukur Muhammad-Baba, said although Jonathan has not officially declared his interest, his growing reputation since leaving office in 2015 gives him an edge in the emerging race.
“The one-term issue is simply political talk, a clear act of desperation,” Muhammad-Baba said in response to Obi’s promise to serve for only four years if elected.
“On the surface, Goodluck Jonathan appears attractive. Over time, and especially since 2015, Jonathan has accumulated a lot of positives. He gave up when he thought he lost the election, and he has been living a quiet life.”
He added that Jonathan’s international recognition and calm post-presidency image have worked in his favour. “Developments since 2015 seem to favour him. However, it’s still a long way till 2027, and he will need to do a lot to sell himself,” he cautioned.
While Jonathan has not yet declared his presidential ambition, speculations about his return to the political scene have intensified amid reports of high-level consultations and support from various interest groups.
The ACF’s remarks come as political alignments and rivalries continue to intensify ahead of what many predict will be a fiercely contested 2027 election.
