Bauchi State Governor, Bala Mohammed, has expressed his willingness to collaborate with the 2023 Labour Party presidential candidate, Peter Obi, in a bid to fortify opposition politics ahead of the 2027 general elections.
Speaking after a closed-door meeting with Obi at the Government House in Bauchi, Mohammed commended the former Anambra State governor’s political acumen, describing him as a visionary leader with a deep understanding of governance and the economy.
“We have great respect and admiration for him because of his style of politics, his statesmanship, his versatility, and his deep knowledge of the economy and governance,” Mohammed stated.
The governor acknowledged Obi’s role as a key opposition figure and emphasized the need for unity to enhance good governance and counter ineffective leadership.
“I appreciate what he is doing as a leader of the opposition because, whether we like it or not, he is now the face of opposition politics in Nigeria. I am ready to work with him to strengthen the opposition, offer a vibrant alternative with vision and strategy, and rescue this country from mediocrities parading themselves as leaders,” he declared.
Their discussions reportedly covered pressing national issues, including the state of opposition politics and the ongoing crisis in Rivers State.
In response, Obi revealed that his visit was part of a broader consultation with political stakeholders to address Nigeria’s growing challenges.
“Nigerians may wonder why I am here, but I have come to consult with him because he is a critical stakeholder in Nigerian politics,” Obi stated.
He reiterated that addressing poverty remains key to tackling insecurity, particularly in Northern Nigeria.
“When people talk about criminality in Nigeria, especially in the North, I tell them the real issue is poverty. Until we address poverty, we cannot solve criminality,” he added.
Obi further stressed the importance of investment in education and agriculture as essential tools for lifting millions out of poverty and curbing crime across the nation.
