Kano, Nigeria – Tragedy struck on Saturday as 20 members of the Kano State contingent returning from the just-concluded National Sports Festival (NSF) in Ogun State lost their lives in a fatal auto crash.
The accident occurred in Dakatsalle town, approximately 50 kilometers from Kano city. The ill-fated vehicle was conveying athletes and officials who had represented Kano at the 2024 edition of the Sports Festival, hosted in Abeokuta, Ogun State.
Confirming the heartbreaking incident, the Chairman of the Sports Writers Association of Nigeria (SWAN), Kano chapter, Zahraddeen Saleh, revealed that the casualties included athletes, journalists, medical personnel, and administrators.
The State Commissioner for Youth and Sports Development, Mustapha Kwankwaso, also released an official statement, confirming the loss and extending condolences on behalf of the state government.
“This is a deeply painful moment for all of us. We are devastated by the news of the ghastly accident that occurred as our athletes were returning home after representing our great state with pride and commitment,” Kwankwaso said.
He added that several other individuals sustained injuries in the crash and are currently receiving medical treatment.
Kwankwaso described the tragedy as a moment of collective mourning for the state, reassuring the public of the government’s full support for the victims and their families. He praised first responders and medical personnel for their swift intervention and care.
“The Kano State Government stands firmly with all affected. We will ensure that the injured receive the best care and that a full investigation into the incident is conducted,” he stated.
The Commissioner reaffirmed the government’s unwavering commitment to the safety and welfare of athletes and officials representing Kano in both national and international competitions.
The heartbreaking incident has cast a shadow over what had been a proud moment of representation and sportsmanship, turning a homecoming into a state-wide mourning.
