17-Year-Old Yobe Girl Crowned World’s Best in English at Global Competition in London

LONDON, UK — In a remarkable display of brilliance and determination, 17-year-old Nafisa Abdullah Aminu from Yobe State has been named the World Best in English Language Skills at the 2025 TeenEagle Global Finals, held in London.

Representing Nigeria through the Nigerian Tulip International College (NTIC), Nafisa triumphed over more than 20,000 students from 69 countries, including participants from native English-speaking nations — a feat that has catapulted her into the global academic spotlight and brought immense pride to Nigeria.

The TeenEagle competition is an internationally acclaimed contest designed to test English proficiency, critical thinking, and communication skills among teenagers worldwide. It draws students from diverse linguistic backgrounds, making Nafisa’s win even more significant.

Her victory was confirmed in a statement by the head of her family, Hassan Salifu, who praised her hard work and credited the support system that empowered her achievement.

“Our daughter’s global success would not have been possible without her discipline and the visionary commitment to education by His Excellency, Governor Mai Mala Buni,” Salifu said, highlighting the Yobe State Governor’s investment in education as a catalyst for Nafisa’s outstanding performance.

He further noted that Nafisa’s triumph over competitors from native English-speaking countries underscores her exceptional intelligence and thorough preparation.

Celebrations have erupted in Yobe and across Nigeria, with calls mounting for both state and national honours to be bestowed on Nafisa. Many Nigerians see her win as a symbol of the country’s untapped academic excellence.

“She has made our country proud, defeating nations where English is a native tongue,” a relative said. “Her victory sends a clear message — with the right support, Nigerian students can shine on the world stage.”

The spotlight now turns to how the government and education stakeholders will continue to nurture talents like Nafisa, who has proven that excellence knows no boundaries — not even language.
