Nigeria loses an alarming 145 women of childbearing age every day due to pregnancy and childbirth complications, according to Dr. Muyi Aina, Executive Director of the National Primary Health Care Development Agency (NPHCDA). In addition, approximately 2,300 children under the age of five die daily from preventable diseases, with the highest rates reported in northern Nigeria.
Speaking at a two-day engagement meeting focused on vaccination and maternal and child health with religious leaders from Northern Nigeria, Dr. Aina highlighted the urgent need to address these preventable deaths. “Every day, Nigeria loses about 2,300 children under five and 145 women, mostly in northern Nigeria. This is a crisis that we cannot afford to ignore,” he said.
Dr. Aina emphasized the importance of ensuring that women receive proper antenatal care and that every pregnancy is managed by skilled healthcare professionals. He also called for widespread vaccination of children, urging families to ensure their children complete the national immunization schedule.
He further stressed that equitable access to healthcare services and building trust between healthcare providers and communities are crucial steps in reversing this tragic trend. “Our combined efforts can create a future where every Nigerian child is immunized and every Nigerian mother gets the care she deserves,” Dr. Aina
