₦142bn Bus Terminals: Peter Obi Blasts Tinubu Govt Over ‘Misplaced Priorities’

Former presidential candidate of the Labour Party, Peter Obi, has faulted the Bola Tinubu-led administration over the recent approval of ₦142 billion for the construction of modern bus terminals across Nigeria’s six geo-political zones.

The Federal Executive Council (FEC) had last week announced the approval, but Obi, in a statement via his X account, described the move as another example of the government’s poor sense of priority.

He argued that true development depends on how a nation allocates its scarce resources, lamenting that the decision reflects “lack of competence, lack of focus, and poor leadership.”

“The entire 2024 budget for all teaching hospitals in federal universities and federal psychiatric centres combined is under ₦100 billion, yet the government approved ₦142 billion for bus terminals,” Obi wrote.

The former Anambra governor stressed that healthcare remains one of the most neglected sectors despite being critical to national development.

“WHO recently reported that over 20 million Nigerians are living with mental health issues. This is disturbing. Health is grossly underfunded, yet funds are being channeled to less pressing projects,” he noted.

Describing the decision as both a “misplaced priority” and a “tragic irony,” Obi declared: “This is not governance. A New Nigeria is possible.”
