Two individuals lost their lives early Monday morning when a passenger bus collided with a truck on the Sagamu-Benin Expressway. Four others sustained various injuries, while 14 passengers escaped unharmed.
The Traffic Compliance and Enforcement Agency spokesperson, Babatunde Akinbiyi, reported that the vehicles involved were an unregistered Howo truck and a Toyota Hiace bus with registration number BEN 823 ZW.
Akinbiyi revealed that the accident was caused by the bus driver’s excessive speed, which led to a loss of control and subsequent collision with the truck. The crash involved 20 people, consisting of 15 males and five females.
“A road traffic accident occurred at Area Command Hill, inbound Ijebu Ode, on the Sagamu-Benin Expressway at around 6:30 am on July 1, 2024. The vehicles involved were a Howo truck without a registration number and a Toyota Hiace bus with registration number BEN 823 ZW. According to eyewitnesses, the bus driver’s excessive speed caused him to lose control and crash into the truck. The victims include 15 males and five females, with four injured and two dead,” Akinbiyi stated.
The bodies of the deceased were taken to the Olabisi Onabanjo University Teaching Hospital (OOUTH) morgue, while the injured received treatment at the same hospital.
“Accident victims have been transported to OOUTH for treatment, and the bodies of the two deceased victims were deposited at the OOUTH morgue,” Akinbiyi added.
