The Jigawa State Police Command has arrested 26-year-old Nura Mas’ud, a resident of Mu’azu village in Sule Tankarkar Local Government Area, for allegedly setting his 60-year-old grandmother, Zuwaira Muhammad, ablaze, resulting in her death.
According to reports, Mrs. Muhammad had repeatedly expressed concern about her grandson’s physical appearance and mental health, which led to frequent inquiries regarding his well-being. Mas’ud, who is said to suffer from mental instability, reportedly became aggravated by her persistent questions.
In a confession, Mas’ud admitted to setting his grandmother on fire using petrol, stating that he was frustrated with her constant questioning. “She frequently asked about my health, and I asked her what was happening to me, but she didn’t respond. That’s why I poured petrol on her,” Mas’ud said.
Confirming the incident, the spokesman for the Jigawa State Police Command, Shiisu Lawan Adam, revealed that preliminary investigations show the suspect has been receiving treatment for a mental illness at the Kazaure Psychiatric Hospital.
Lawan stated, “The suspect, Nura Mas’ud, took a petrol canister to his family house, poured it on his grandmother, and set her on fire. She died while receiving treatment at a hospital.”
Mas’ud has voluntarily confessed to committing the act, citing his grandmother’s repeated inquiries as the trigger for his actions. The investigation into the tragic incident is ongoing.
