As the Kano State Government’s deadline for pharmaceutical traders to relocate to a new location expired on Friday, the state police stated they would enforce compliance and punish any trader(s) found in breach of the directive to relocate.
The state government gave an ultimatum to all pharmaceutical vendors in the Sabon Gari market in Fagge Local Government Area to shift to the newly constructed market – Kano Economic City, located on the outskirts of the city at ‘Dangwauro’.
Husseini Zakari, the new market’s leader, stated that the market was commissioned for drug business in February, but some groups of pharmaceutical dealers are undermining the government’s effort to relocate traders to the location for questionable reasons.
Following a visit to the new market on Thursday, the state’s police commissioner, Muhammed Gumel, said the command will collaborate with all stakeholders to guarantee that traders shift to the new market, according to the command’s spokesperson, Abdullahi Kiyawa.
He stated that the state’s security services will work together to bring all sorts of illegal drug and substance dealings to a halt across the state.
“The Kano State Commissioner of Police, Mohammed Gumel, was shown around the newly built Kano Economic City Market and interacted with members of Kanawa Pharmaceutical Partners (KPP), a project facilitated by the Federal Ministry of Health through the Pharmacy Council of Nigeria, led by Usaini Zakari.”
“Mr Zakari greeted the commissioner and showed him around the Kano Economic City Market’s Coordinated Whole Sale Centre. The integrated wholesale centre would aid in the control of the transit and sale of illicit, counterfeit, and substandard pharmaceuticals in Kano State.”
“Kano Pharmaceutical Partners has put all machinery in place to ensure the smooth take-off of the market,” Mr Zakari told the police commissioner during the visit, according to the police statement. “Police, as major players in internal security, has a role to play in ensuring smooth operations and improving businesses in the state,” Mr Zakari said during the visit, according to the police statement.
The police have stated that they will provide appropriate support for the new market’s launch.
“We must congratulate the federal government on bringing this project to Kano State.” One of the most troubling issues in the state is the issue of drug misuse among youths, which is responsible for the majority of significant crimes perpetrated in the state.
“We will give you our full support in our efforts to sanitize the state.” On our part, the police command has begun gathering intelligence and has already begun crime mapping the state to determine how best to reduce the sale and use of illicit narcotics by open market sellers, including consumption by state minors.
