The Ogun State government has pledged to pursue justice for the family of Master Monday Ariyo, an SS2 student from Obada Grammar School in the Imeko Afon Local Government Area, who tragically died following severe disciplinary action by a teacher.

In a condolence letter sent to Ariyo’s family, the state expressed deep sorrow over the loss and assured the family that those responsible would be held accountable. Signed by Mrs. Oluwatosin Oloko, the Permanent Secretary in the Ministry of Education, Science, and Technology, the letter confirmed that the teacher involved has been suspended pending further investigation. The school’s principal, Mrs. Tamrat Onaolapo, has also been formally queried about the incident.

According to reports, the teacher allegedly administered 24 lashes to the late Ariyo, who was then ordered by the principal to perform 162 frog jumps as punishment for a reported disrespectful comment made in class. Witnesses state that Ariyo collapsed during the punishment and was rushed to the Federal Medical Center (FMC) in Idi-Aba, Abeokuta, where he was later pronounced dead.

Police spokesperson Omolola Odutola, who confirmed the incident, shared that the deceased’s body has been taken to Ayetoro mortuary for autopsy. The Ogun State Police Command has launched an investigation to determine the full circumstances surrounding Ariyo’s death.

The government’s condolence letter praised the late student as “an exceptional pupil who will be deeply missed by his peers, the school, and the entire state.”
