Internal party crisis weakening PDP in Kaduna, says group

The Coalition for Kaduna Political Groups (KPG) has raised alarms over the escalating internal crisis within the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in Kaduna State, warning that the party’s deepening divisions could jeopardize its chances in the 2027 general elections.

In a statement signed by its Convener, Ibrahim Murtala Kachia, along with three other executive members, the group emphasized that the PDP’s internal power struggles, leadership crisis, and lack of unity are eroding trust among its members and the electorate.

The group specifically noted that the situation is particularly concerning in Southern Kaduna, where recent developments have exposed widespread dissatisfaction with the party. The defection of key political figures, including Senator Shehu Sani and 10,000 of his supporters, highlights the gravity of the PDP’s challenges.

“The PDP’s inability to address its internal conflicts and provide tangible benefits to its supporters has led to a decline in its popularity,” the statement said. “In contrast, the All Progressives Congress (APC) has demonstrated stronger internal cohesion and a more effective response to national issues.”

The KPG also cautioned that the exodus of influential figures like Senator Danjuma Laah, Engr. Andrew Yakubu, and Joseph Gumbari, along with thousands of their supporters, could further weaken the party in the region.

“The once-dominant PDP now struggles to deliver meaningful benefits to its supporters, raising questions about its effectiveness as a political force. Without the promise of real influence in governance, loyalty to the party is rapidly waning,” the group added.

The coalition urged the PDP leadership to embrace accountability, inclusivity, and transparency in addressing its internal issues. It emphasized that for the party to reclaim its status as a credible opposition, it must acknowledge its past mistakes and work to rebuild its connection with the electorate.

“The ongoing disunity within the PDP is a paradox. The party calls for solidarity but fails to present a cohesive agenda. Without a unified approach to governance and outreach, the PDP risks further alienating its base,” the group concluded.
