FG Increases NYSC Allowance to N77,000, Exceeds New Minimum Wage

0

The Federal Government has approved an increase in the monthly allowance for National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) members to N77,000, effective from July 2024. This increment surpasses the newly set national minimum wage of N70,000 by N7,000.

The announcement was made in a letter dated September 25, 2024, from the National Salaries, Incomes and Wages Commission (NSIWC), signed by its chairman, Mr. Ekpo Nta. The increase is aligned with the provisions of the National Minimum Wage (Amendment) Act 2024, which set the new minimum wage for workers at N70,000.

A statement released by the Acting Director of Information and Public Relations for NYSC, Caroline Embu, acknowledged the increase, highlighting that NYSC Director General, Brigadier General YD Ahmed, had previously advocated for improved welfare for corps members during a meeting with the NSIWC Chairman.

The NYSC Director General expressed his gratitude to the Federal Government, noting that the allowance boost would provide much-needed relief to corps members while also increasing their motivation to serve the nation more effectively.

Previously, corps members received a monthly allowance of N33,000, which reflected the old national minimum wage.
