According to Mrs. Titilayo Shitta-Bey-Jeje, the Solicitor General and Permanent Secretary of the Lagos State Ministry of Justice, 25 laws allowing simple access to the judiciary have been signed and enacted into the Lagos law.

She said Lagos State is a center of excellence because it constantly innovates and develops laws and policies that are focused on improving the lives of its citizens.

At the just-finished annual conference of the Nigerian Bar Association Section on Public Interest and Development Law in Lagos, Mrs. Shitta-Bey-Jeje spoke at the Lagos State session. She said that 25 measures have been enacted and signed into law whose goals are to improve the administration of justice and residents’ access to the court system.

Shitta-Bey-Jeje also noted that 10 courts had been digitalized and that the state government, under the direction of Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu, was committed to improving the quality of service delivery of the state judiciary. She also noted that Lagosians could access an online platform to obtain a variety of legal advice in addition to renovating various magistrates’ and high courts’ buildings throughout the state.

Speaking at the event was Mr. Jide Oduyebo, the Lagos State Administrator General and Public Trustee, who highlighted that his office was established to administer and fairly distribute among eligible beneficiaries the assets of a person or persons who passed away without leaving a will. He continued by saying that, among other things, the GPT had acquired letters of administration for estates that were under its control.

In her remarks on the work of her organization, Miss Rukayat Shomade, the coordinator of the Lagos State Task Force on Land Grabbers, revealed that the group has received over 7000 petitions since it was founded.

She claimed that 2500 of the petitions were handled by the land-grabbing unit and that the state received about 1500 frivolous petitions from beyond its jurisdiction. She also claimed that 10 convictions were obtained and that 70 petitioners received complete property returns.
