NCDC: Lagos at Epicenter of Nigeria’s Cholera Outbreak with 104 Cases

The Nigeria Centre for Disease Control and Prevention (NCDC) has identified Lagos State as the epicenter of the current cholera outbreak in Nigeria. According to data on the NCDC’s website, Lagos reported 104 new cholera cases out of the country’s total of 113 cases for the past week.

The outbreak has resulted in seven deaths nationwide, with Lagos experiencing a case fatality rate (CFR) of 6.1%. Ogun State reported seven cases, while Katsina had one case.

Over the past month, Lagos has reported 533 suspected cholera cases, significantly contributing to Nigeria’s total of 576 cases. Other states with reported cases include Ogun (19), Rivers (9), Katsina (8), Oyo (2), Abia (2), Bayelsa (2), and Sokoto (1).

The NCDC also reported that there were 32 deaths across the country last month, resulting in a CFR of 5.6%, which is significantly higher than the national expected average of 1%, highlighting the severity of the outbreak.

Efforts to diagnose and control the outbreak included 217 Rapid Diagnostic Tests (RDTs), of which 17 returned positive results, and 232 stool culture tests, with 28 positive results. The NCDC continues to work on controlling the spread and mitigating the impact of the outbreak.
