The National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control (NAFDAC) has warned the public about a contaminated batch of tainted Sprite 50cl glass bottles that are circulating in Nigeria.
The product was discovered following a consumer complaint received and reviewed by the Agency’s Post-marketing Surveillance Unit, according to a statement signed by the agency’s management.
According to NAFDAC’s examination, over five crates of the implicated batch, (BN: AZ6 22:32) of search Sprite 50cl glass bottles with a manufacturing date (MFD: 180423) were found to be contaminated with particles.
“The affected batch of the unwholesome product has been sampled for laboratory analysis in the NAFDAC laboratory, and the Agency has directed all zonal directors and state coordinators to carry out surveillance and mop up the implicated batch of the unwholesome product”
NAFDAC agreed to investigate the source of the contamination by conducting a thorough current Good Manufacturing Practice (cGMP) inspection of the production facility to verify compliance.
The Agency further ordered the company (Nigerian Bottling Company Limited (Abuja plant) to recall the tainted batch and report to NAFDAC for effective monitoring.
NAFDAC further encouraged those in possession of contaminated search Sprite 50cl glass bottles to report them to the nearest NAFDAC office, while urging distributors, merchants, and consumers to exercise caution and avoid consuming, selling, or distributing the tainted product.
