Abuja, Nigeria – As Valentine’s Day approaches, the National Agency for the Control of AIDS (NACA) has called on Nigerians to celebrate love with a focus on safety and responsibility. The agency emphasized that intimacy should always go hand in hand with protection to prevent the spread of HIV and other sexually transmitted infections (STIs).
In a statement signed by Mrs. Toyin Aderibigbe, the Director General of NACA, Dr. Temitope Ilori, urged individuals to make informed decisions about their health and relationships. She noted that while HIV remains a major public health concern, it is entirely preventable with the right precautions.
“We want everyone to enjoy Valentine’s Day while making choices that safeguard their health. HIV is preventable, and we have the means to halt its spread. Love responsibly, get tested, and make informed decisions,” Dr. Ilori stated.
She warned against risky behaviors such as unprotected sex, multiple partners, and substance abuse, which can increase the chances of HIV transmission.
The agency also reiterated the importance of knowing one’s HIV status as a critical step in preventing the virus’s spread. Nigerians are encouraged to incorporate regular HIV testing into their personal healthcare routines, with free testing available at all government hospitals.
With this year’s Valentine’s Day celebrations underway, NACA’s message remains clear: Love smart, stay safe, and protect yourself and your partner.
