A cholera outbreak has claimed three lives and left many in critical condition in Bulu-Ndoro community, Burutu Local Government Area of Delta State, forcing several victims to seek treatment in neighboring Bayelsa State.
Arede Edeinmene, Executive Assistant on Political Matters to Governor Sheriff Oborevwori, raised the alarm during a press briefing in Warri, calling for swift government intervention to curb the epidemic’s spread.
Edeinmene revealed that nearly every household in Bulu-Ndoro has been affected, with the local health center overwhelmed and lacking adequate medical personnel, drugs, and equipment.
He highlighted the dire water crisis in the community, where residents rely on a contaminated river for drinking and domestic use, further fueling the outbreak.
“The absence of pipe-borne water has left my people with no choice but to use the polluted river, endangering their lives,” Edeinmene lamented, noting that the deceased victims were family breadwinners.
He urged the state government to upgrade the overstretched health center, provide more medical supplies, and install a functional water system and electricity.
With fear gripping the community, some families have fled to escape the deadly outbreak. Edeinmene emphasized that immediate state intervention is crucial to saving lives and preventing further spread.
