The Benue State government has confirmed a suspected outbreak of Lassa fever following the death of three individuals and 12 reported cases in the state. The Commissioner for Health and Human Services, Dr. Yanmar Ortese, disclosed the development in a telephone conversation with journalists on Wednesday.
Dr. Ortese stated that the deaths and cases are currently under suspicion, as the individuals exhibited symptoms consistent with Lassa fever. The incident reportedly occurred last week in Okpokwu Local Government Area.
“We have suspected cases of Lassa fever. Three people have died with symptoms indicative of the disease, and 12 samples have been collected from those who had close contact with the deceased. The results are pending, and until we receive them, the cases remain under suspicion,” he said.
The commissioner further emphasized that the state’s Ministry of Health has mobilized its emergency operations unit to respond swiftly to the situation. He confirmed that quarantine measures have been implemented for those suspected to be affected by the disease.
As of now, there have been no confirmed cases of Lassa fever in the state.
