Popular Nigerian rapper, Darlington Achakpo, popularly known as Speed Darlington, has been granted bail after spending nearly a month in police custody. His counsel, Stanley Alieke, confirmed the development on Monday via his Instagram account, stating, “Apki has been granted bail by the court.”
The rapper was arrested on November 27 during a performance at a show in Owerri, Imo State. His arrest was linked to an alleged public altercation involving Afrofusion star, Damini Ogulu, better known as Burna Boy.
Speed Darlington had recently mocked Burna Boy for his association with US rapper Sean ‘Diddy’ Combs, who is facing multiple serious charges, including sexual exploitation and human trafficking. Darlington’s comments reportedly led to his first arrest. Upon being detained, he vowed not to retract his statements about Burna Boy and his ties to the embattled rapper.
Darlington’s lawyer, Deji Adeyanju, had earlier stated that the rapper would either be arraigned within 48 hours or granted bail. He later confirmed that the court had granted the rapper’s FREP (Fundamental Rights Enforcement Procedure) application, ensuring Darlington’s release pending further legal processes.
Despite his recent legal troubles, Darlington has made it clear that he will continue to call out Burna Boy over what he perceives as inappropriate associations.
