Speed Darlington Apologizes After Backlash Over Viral Video on Alleged Encounter With Minor, Calls It “Publicity Stunt”

Controversial Nigerian singer Speed Darlington has issued a public apology following widespread outrage over a viral video in which he appeared to confess to a sexual encounter with a 15-year-old girl.

The video, which circulated heavily across social media platforms, drew swift condemnation from the public, with many calling for accountability over the artist’s disturbing remarks.

In a follow-up video posted on his Instagram page on Wednesday, the singer retracted his claims, stating that the confession was entirely fabricated as part of a publicity stunt to promote his latest song.

Speed Darlington described the video as mere “cruise” and insisted it was never meant to be taken seriously. He acknowledged the public concern and extended an apology to fans and viewers who found the content offensive.

“All my followers pissed off about the video I recorded in which I spoke about me sleeping with a 15-year-old, I am an artiste. I need controversy to eat. If you are not trending, you are not getting booked. Simple,” he said.

He continued, “I have a new song now. The song is talking about f#ck this, f#ck that. This is my genre. I do not perform Christian music… Don’t give it more than it is supposed to have. If any of you are offended, it’s alright. Apologies.”

His comments have sparked ongoing debates on the limits of artistic expression and the ethics of using controversial content for self-promotion.

Meanwhile, legislative productivity continues to raise concerns in Nigeria. Between May 2024 and May 2025, only seven bills were passed out of the 341 introduced. In the House of Representatives, of the 1,727 bills filed by December 2024, only 114 were passed — highlighting a troubling gap between legislative proposals and actual governance impact.
